There are some “future events” that are easier to see in the Bible than others. In the case of “the Millennium” - it might be best to simply “see what we can” and accept that there is much that we just cannot know. With this thought in mind, let us take a serious look at what we can know.
First, let's consider the key verses of Revelation chapter 20.
Revelation 20:1-3 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.
Revelation 20:4-6 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
Revelation 20:7-10 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. 9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. 10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
What can we glean from the above verses?
The devil will be bound in the bottomless pit for 1000 years.
Because of the devil's removal, he will be kept from deceiving the people of the world during this special 1000 year period.
Jesus will rule and reign for this period of 1000 years.
Jesus will not rule and reign alone. The ones who will have been killed for the witness of Jesus and the Word of God, who will have refused to worship the beast or his image, or have taken his mark, will rule and reign with the Lord for this 1000 year special period. And all those who will have been part of the first resurrection (the rapture of the living and those asleep in Christ, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17) will be priests of God and Jesus, also ruling for the 1000 year period.
At the conclusion of this Millennium, the devil will be loosed to deceive the nations again, but only for a short time.
The devil will succeed again in getting a great number of people to follow him in rebelling against God and attack the Lord and His people but will fail again.
Gog and Magog will be a key part as the enemies against God and of the final battle.
And that upon his rebellion and failure, the devil will be put away forever in the lake of fire and brimstone where the Antichrist and false prophet will already be.
At the conclusion of these events, there will be the Great White Throne of Judgment and the end of the old earth and old heavens (universe).
Revelation 20:11-15 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
There are so many views on these final events, but by putting all the Scripture together, a true timeline reveals itself.
There are some in America today, that believe that the New Jerusalem, the Holy City, which is in heaven, will come down to earth for the Millennium. This is impossible. Not long after the close of the the Millennium, the current earth will be destroyed by fire and Father God would not put the Holy City here to be burned up. On the contrary, we read in Revelation 21 how it will come down upon the new earth.
Revelation 21:1-3 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.”
From Revelation 21:1 to the end of the Bible, John describes the beginning of the new life for all Christians with a new heaven and earth setting. This universe will pass away and all that is in it, including the old earth. Jesus went to prepare a place for us and we believe that to be the Holy City in heaven. The Lord has a magnificent future planned far beyond what we can imagine. The Holy City will come down from heaven onto a new earth and some type of new heaven (which might mean a new universe again) after the Great White Throne of Judgment and it seems that even “the hell” that will have been in the old earth will be cast into its final place (Revelation 20:11-15). This is also confirmed by 2 Peter 3:10-13 which says that this earth and universe will be destroyed with fire and that when the Great White Throne of Judgment is complete, there will be a new beginning of the new heaven and earth where righteousness will be forever.
For certain, we can know that those who will be raptured up (both the living and those who will have preceded them), which we believe will include those who will die being faithful to the Lord during the tribulation, will be on this earth during this 1000 year period (as priests to God and ruling and reigning with Christ, Revelation 20:4-6). They will “return with the Lord” at His Second Coming, which will involve the Battle of Armageddon. While it might be disturbing to some, the riders that will be coming with Jesus to the Battle of Armageddon are the body of Christ. This can be seen in the following verses and will be confirmed with the next section of verses.
Revelation 19:11-14 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.
Revelation 17:14 "These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful."
In our viewpoint, at the final conclusion of the end of this age, the Lord will return to this earth for the Millennium. And the devil knows it too. So in desperation, he will try to block and attack the Lord who will be returning with His saints. And when the Lord returns, He will come back to the very place He left from, which is the Mount of Olives, just outside of Jerusalem. North of there, is Mount Megiddo and the valley (sometimes called a plain) of Jezreel, where the Antichrist and company will gather together for their plans.
It is sad that some are fearful at the thought of riding with the Lord for battle. Others are brave and gallant and many somewhere in between. The important thing is to: fear not. The Lord will destroy them in what might be the shortest battle in all history. The Lord will slay them with the sword of His mouth. The battle will be so “overwhelmingly won” by the Lord that there is not much to tell. More verses are written about the leading up to it and the carnage that will follow, than anything about the battle. The Lord and His people win. The Bible calls it “the battle of that great day of God Almighty” and great is the carnage of all the evil ones of the earth that will be eradicated.
Revelation 19:15-21 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, "Come and gather together for the supper of the great God, 18 that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great." 19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh.
For more information on what it means to rule them with a rod of iron, see the article, The Lord Will Rule With A Rod Of Iron. To sum it up, He will smash them like a good shepherd would strike a predator that would attempt to hurt his sheep. “Rule” - in the manner used here, means to apply authority and destroy the evil ones.
The Battle of Armageddon, the putting away of the Antichrist and false prophet, the destruction of the wicked, the imprisonment of Satan and the Second Coming are major events leading to the Millennium. Nothing will stop the Lord and He will return for His Second Coming to rule and reign on this earth for one thousand special years along with His people that He is bringing to rule and reign with Him.
It is important to realize that there will be others involved. There will be a special people, a remnant of Israel consisting of 144,000 Jews, 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel that will have never left earth. They will be sealed for 3 ½ years between the Rapture and the Millennium. The seal will be for their protection from the evil ones who would kill them if they had the chance. It is our belief that God will use this group of people to re-populate the earth which is important to God's heart and will fulfill so much prophecy, some of which will be in the verses at the end of this article. More can also be read about the 144,000 in the article, 144,000 Jews Of The Book Of Revelation.
There are also further thoughts for possible consideration. There may be people during the Millennium who will be given the opportunity to live, who never had a chance on earth to live a full life, such as aborted babies, young people killed before the age of maturity or possibly those who were truly mentally handicapped. There is even the possibility that some who would have chosen Christ if they would have ever had the chance to hear the Gospel, will be given their chance. Some say that God would let these people into heaven based upon merit. Others say, that because Jesus says there is only one way to heaven and that is through Him, that hearing and accepting the Gospel is necessary. The Bible is clear that all have sinned and are in need of a Savior. These all seem like realistic possibilities.
Time will tell. The Bible says that those who will have died for the witness of Jesus and the Word of God, who will have refused to worship the beast or his image, or have taken his mark, and those who will be raised in the first resurrection (the Rapture) will rule and reign with the Lord. Will they be ruling and reigning over the 144,000 and their possible descendants? Over others? We can only speculate.
There is another thought for consideration. In the sense that mankind, the earth and the relationship between God and man, will, in a way, be coming full circle. In Genesis, it is clear that God gave mankind dominion over the earth. “Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth"” (Genesis 1:28). He did not say that their dominion was to be over humans. And in the verses of Revelation 20:4-6, it does say that people will live and rule with Christ but it does not exactly say “who or what they will rule over” with Him. We know in some of the verses that speak of the Millennium (of which, some are posted toward the end of this article) that children will be being born (Isaiah 65:20)and that even by the end of the Millennium, there will be a large number of people populating the earth (Revelation 20:7-8). And all will be under the peaceful and righteous administration of the Lord Jesus Christ. Will those ruling and reigning with Christ (who will have new glorified bodies that will have been changed at the rapture and will no longer procreate) merely rule over “the earth and its creatures” with the Lord or, that and more, as we suspect that they will be ruling over the people that will be in regular human form that will be procreating?
In the process of time, “whatever the Lord has planned” will come into fruition in. The important thing is to stay close to the Lord, have His Word abiding in our hearts, living daily with the leadership of the Holy Spirit and stay faithful to the Lord and His plans for each of us.
So far, the first resurrection has been explained. Let's look briefly at the following verses and consider the rest of the dead.
Revelation 20:5-6 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.”
The “rest of the dead” are the wicked. They will have to appear before the Lord at the Great White Throne of Judgment which will follow the conclusion of the Millennium and the time of testing during the release of Satan. Some people believe that Christians along with the wicked, will be resurrected for the Great White Throne of Judgment. But they will already be with the Lord and their “works” will have already been judged at the time of the Rapture (called the first resurrection by John in Revelation). For Christians, there will be no judgment of sins that are forgiven. When Jesus washes away one's sins, they are gone. And anyone who teaches or preaches otherwise is simply in error. More can be read about the two different types of judgments in the article, The Great White Throne Of Judgment And Judgment Day.
When the dead are brought to their final judgment, their demise is called the second death. There is no second death for believers. Here are the rest of the verses involved:
Revelation 20:7-10 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. 9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. 10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
From the above verses, we can know:
Once the 1000 years are complete, the devil will be loosed. This will result in a short time of testing and a final rebellion and war, upon which the Lord will burn and devour them with a fire that will come from heaven.
The current heaven (universe) and earth will cease to exist.
That final battle will involve Gog and Magog.
The devil will be cast in with the Antichrist and false prophet who will already be in the lake of fire and brimstone, where they will be tormented nonstop for all eternity.
There will be a Great White Throne of Judgment where all the dead will be judged “according to their works” that have been recorded (Jesus' blood speaks for all believers, therefore there is no condemnation).
This final judgment will result in the dead being cast into the lake of fire along with Death and Hades which is called the second death. This will be for those “not found” written in the Book of Life.
This is the eternal demise of death: eternal death.
So let us recap some of what we can see so far.
We know that after the rapture, God will pour out His wrath upon the people of this earth. At the conclusion of the last week of years (commonly called the Tribulation), the Lord will be coming back to take His earth for a special 1000 year time under His personal rule. The devil will rally all the forces he can to try to prevent it and will result in the Battle of Armageddon. The Lord and His people, who will come on white horses, will prevail.
The 144,000 Jews, 12,000 from each tribe of Israel, who will not bow to the Antichrist (in worship or take his mark) will be sealed for the last 3 ½ years (of what is commonly called the Tribulation) and will continue their time on earth into the Millennium. Along with these, will be the return of “those who will have been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the Word of God, who will have not worshiped the beast or his image, and will not take his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. These are included with all believers who will have been part of the first resurrection.
After the 1000 years are complete, the evil one will be released for “a short time” and will return to trying to deceive people and turn as many against God as he possibly can. This will result in the final battle with the devil and many, many people, including Gog and Magog, where they will attack “the camp of the saints and the beloved city.” God Himself will put an end to it and them with “fire sent down from heaven.”
The old heaven (universe) and earth will cease to be and all the wicked ones (the rest of the dead) will be forced to appear before the Great White Throne of Judgment where those who refused the pardon of Jesus, will be sentenced according to their works. They will be cast into the lake of fire for all eternity along with Death and Hades.
And finally, death and sin will be no more, God will create a new heaven and earth and the Holy City that Jesus has prepared for His people, will come to its rest upon this new earth. Father God will have His heart's desire fulfilled, which is recorded as:
Revelation 21:3-5 "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new."
We can know some about life during the Millennium from various Scripture throughout the Bible. Here are some millennial verses with light commentary.
Isaiah 2:1-5 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come and say, "Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths." For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and rebuke many people; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. O house of Jacob, come and let us walk In the light of the Lord.
From these verses, we see that there will be a mountain of the Lord (a Zion) from which the Lord will rule from. We see that there will still be disobedience but it will be completely different. There will be no more war and injustice will be dealt with. There will be no more corrupt government leadership which so many suffer from today. The Lord's ways will be clearly known and honored.
Isaiah 65:17-25 "For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem as a rejoicing, and her people a joy. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in My people; the voice of weeping shall no longer be heard in her, nor the voice of crying. "No more shall an infant from there live but a few days, nor an old man who has not fulfilled his days; for the child shall die one hundred years old, but the sinner being one hundred years old shall be accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; For as the days of a tree, so shall be the days of My people, and My elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain, nor bring forth children for trouble; for they shall be the descendants of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them. "It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain," says the Lord.
These verses are a great example of how we need to take all the Scriptures on any subject into consideration. From Revelation 20:11 and 21:1, we know when this old earth and its atmosphere will be destroyed, that a new earth will be created whereupon God will dwell with us, His people, for eternity and with the New Jerusalem upon it (Revelation 21:2-3). When we read these verses in Isaiah 65, we can know that what is meant there, is that the Lord will do something creatively drastic with the earth and its atmosphere. There is no doubt that the earth will be adversely affected in the near future. We know from Scripture, that there will be damage from the major wars that will happen during the last 7 years of this age, as well as, from God’s wrath being poured out. The earth will require some type of healing and restoration, and probably some kind of adjustment. We also know that in order for people to live long life spans, and for the wolf and lamb to be at peace with each other (and also the lion eating straw like the ox) for the Millennium, that something drastic will have to happen. We can also see that sin is still happening, so we know that these verses are not after Revelation 21, upon the new earth. The millennial time will be an amazing time, especially for Israel, as the Lord will personally reign over them in a time of peace and blessing.
Jeremiah 3:14-19 "Return, O backsliding children," says the Lord; "for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion. And I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. Then it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and increased in the land in those days," says the Lord, "that they will say no more, 'The ark of the covenant of the Lord.' It shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it, nor shall it be made anymore. At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem. No more shall they follow the dictates of their evil hearts. In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given as an inheritance to your fathers. "But I said: 'How can I put you among the children and give you a pleasant land, a beautiful heritage of the hosts of nations?' "And I said: 'You shall call Me, "My Father," and not turn away from Me."
This could only be millennial. No more remembrance or use of the "ark of the Covenant" and the "Throne of the Lord" will be there. People will be faithful to the Lord and not "follow the dictates of their evil hearts" and call Him "My Father." This is all possible, only by Jesus Christ.
Ezekiel 36:33-36 Thus says the Lord God: "On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, and the ruins shall be rebuilt. The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass by. So they will say, 'This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden; and the wasted, desolate, and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.' Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, the Lord, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. I, the Lord, have spoken it, and I will do it."
Forgiveness will be offered to and received by Israel. Desolate land will be tilled and restored and people will say that the land will be like the Garden of Eden. Many think of these verses about Israel today, but it is obvious that Israel has yet to be cleansed from her iniquities as in these verses. The 144,000 remnant of Israel, will help fulfill these verses. And it will be more like the Garden of Eden than anyone can possibly imagine.
Ezekiel 34:25-31 "I will make a covenant of peace with them, and cause wild beasts to cease from the land; and they will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. I will make them and the places all around My hill a blessing; and I will cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be showers of blessing. Then the trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase. They shall be safe in their land; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have broken the bands of their yoke and delivered them from the hand of those who enslaved them. And they shall no longer be a prey for the nations, nor shall beasts of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and no one shall make them afraid. I will raise up for them a garden of renown, and they shall no longer be consumed with hunger in the land, nor bear the shame of the Gentiles anymore. Thus they shall know that I, the Lord their God, am with them, and they, the house of Israel, are My people," says the Lord God. "You are My flock, the flock of My pasture; you are men, and I am your God," says the Lord God.
The earth will be fertile again. People will be safe. No more wild beasts or slavery. Israel physically and spiritually will bloom unto the Lord.
Isaiah 11:6-9 "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play by the cobra's hole, and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper's den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”
The whole earth will be at peace, as the animals, humans and land, will all live in harmony. The animals we now know as carnivorous, will become herbivorous and there will be no more animosity between animals and animals, or animals and humans. A child will be able to lead a tiger around. No one will be hurt or destroyed in all the holy mountain of the Lord and the whole earth will be full of the “knowledge of the Lord.”
While it is hard for us to “wrap our minds around all this,” what God has spoken of, will surely be. Our Lord has made promises and He will keep them, even to the smallest detail.
We believe that there have been almost 6000 years of mankind, as we have known it. This next one thousand years, this special Millennium, will be kind of like a Sabbath for the earth. Before the fall in the Garden, the earth and all in it was good. With the fall, the earth became cursed, as well as man. The earth will be recovered from so much of the destruction caused by mankind and Satan for the Millennium.
In conclusion, the Lord will be physically close to mankind again, as it once was in the Garden of Eden. People will still be able to be born-again and become the temples of the Holy Spirit, as we are now. The Lord will most likely replenish the earth with the remnant (the 144,000) and their future spouses and their descendants. And as some believe, the Lord will possibly raise those who died in this world, without ever hearing the Gospel. Life will not be harsh, and the knowledge of the Lord will be seen and known throughout the entire earth. Lifespans will be long as they once were in the pre-flood era, which would seem to mean that the Lord will make some serious atmospheric changes. Peace on earth will be the norm. Sin will exist but be kept under control. People will still be born with fallen natures, but with no devil to mislead them. The Lord will be King of the earth and the previously redeemed citizens of heaven, will be sent among them to help rule and reign for a wonderful and godly earth.
